The dismantling of the British State

The first official sharia courts are now functioning in Britain, for the first time placing parts of sharia law on a legal par with British law. This fucking government should be indicted for treason as we now have the first legal means to promote an Islamic state-within-a-state. How long before Muslim women will be pressured into being treated by a legal system that devalues them against men, in contravention of the Human Rights Act?

I guess those pronoucements from the Lord Chief Justice and the Archbishop of Canterbury were aimed at preparing the public for an act that was already underway.

This is an appalling situation. I am not sure whether this will make us the laughing stock of the rest of the world, or make us look like a basket case. We are slowly losing our identity as Europe and now issues such as Sharia Law loom large. If this continues, I suspect we will see a surge of nationalism, not unlike the 1960’s.

I suppose you would also outlaw beth din?

As far as I’m concerned, the government should strive to tolerate people who wish to volunteer themselves before such systems, much as we might not wish to ourselves.

Further, I don’t see how this in any way puts sharia on a par with British law. Under the law of contract people are entirely free to contract themselves into arrangements such as this, so in fact, this is wholly in line with the historical development of common law… which of course can still be overruled by parliament where rulings frustrate liberal principles that people see as beyond compromise – much the same, once again, as the system with regard to jewish law. But of course we don’t know if that’s what sharia courts would actually do, and how they would do it.

Firstly, while I am not comfortable with certain aspects of Beth Din, notably divorce where women can get the rough end of the deal, the practise fo Judaic law is not superior to British law.
The critical issue about the stablishment of Sharia courts is that Sharia is completely incompatible with British law as it claims a total superiority. The law in a state should be single and unified, the outcome of this move will be to progressively ghettoise Muslims. By this move, we have just enshrined religious law on a par with secular laws. Where do our principles of equality before the law stand in regards to a system whereby non-believers, homosexuals and women are devalued against believing men? How is this actually compatible with Britain?
More to the point, why would one defend this move?
