So long and thanks for all the fish…

Which is how a recent LGF article finishes on severing links with Powerline.
It seems to me that a large section of the right has taken leave of its senses. What the fuck is going on with protesters comparing Obama to Hitler? He’s not even close to being an autocrat – these are dangerous stupidities that are going to keep the Republicans out of power for the next twenty years…

Though I don’t agree with the loonies “Obama is Hitler” mantra, Obama’s deliberate expansion of the state’s role in private enterprise, its increasing interest in public/private joint ventures and partnerships, and greater government regulation of business, does ring of fascism.

    Just a thought…

It’s far more likely to belong to a socialist way of thinking. Fascism is the wrong choice of analogy for multiple reasons.
      1. Fascism was based around a paranoid sense of national identity. Obama isn’t really very patriotic; he’s more of an internationalist.
      2. Fascism grew out of militarist thinking and above all racist aggressive nationalism. Given that Obama doesn’t really want to fight wars, this puts his thinking closer to fuzzy left-wing socialist thinking.
      3. Fascism was not caused by or a symptom of state expansion. European states had been expanding since the 19th Century but only Italy and Germany hosted sucessful fascist parties.

Again, Obama is more likely to be a fuzzy socialist than a fascist. And like fuzzy socialists he had kept close to “fashionable” fascists such as Edward Said or the Muslim Brotherhood.
Fascists see to dominate and be feared. (American) Socialists want to be liked and to govern “nicely”.
